I. Household Identification
A. Specifics (Questions including name of household head, name of respondent, relationship of respondent to head, gender of respondent, how long head has lived in village, current marital status of head, how long head’s spouse has lived in village, most convenient phone number to reach respondent, and who owns phone number)

II. Village Ranking and Opinions (Questions including ranking of four villages in terms of best and worst for activities [availability & quality of institutions, cooperation among villagers, natural resources, village leadership, or standard of living], why respondent thinks villages are different, and respondent’s comments on each of the villages)

IV. Household Composition (Questions including total number of household members, name of each household member, each member’s relation to head of household, each member’s gender, each member’s age, whether member is in school, each member’s educational background, what system of grades was in place when member went to school, whether each member has received any adult education, and whether each member has received any additional training)

V. Occupation (Questions including each member’s primary occupation over past 12 months, what type of worker member is, wage for job, how long member has been doing job, each member’s secondary occupation, what type of worker member is, and village positions held by member)

VI. Occupational History (Questions including whether each member has had any other primary occupations besides what s/he is presently doing, previous primary occupation, for how long, what was each member’s occupation before that, for how long, the job before that, for how long, whether each member seriously considered changing job, to what job, why each member was unable to change jobs, and why each member could not borrow necessary funds to change jobs)

VII. Children Living Outside the Household (Questions including how many children live outside household, each child’s name, each child’s age, each child’s gender, each child’s educational background, each child’s primary occupation, type of worker child is, where each child lives, how many times each child sent household money over the past 12 months, how much was sent in total, how many times household sent each child money over the past 12 months, and how much was sent in total)

VIII. Residential Patterns

A. Head’s Relatives (Questions including whether head’s relative is living, how many relatives head has, how many live in head’s household, how many live in head’s village, and how many live in head’s tambon [father, mother, sons, daughters, older brothers, younger brothers, older sisters, or younger sisters])

B. Spouse’s Relatives (Questions including whether spouse’s relative is living, how many relatives spouse has, how many live in household, how many live in village, and how many live in tambon [father, mother, older brothers, younger brothers, older sisters, or younger sisters])

C. Head’s or Spouse’s Parents out of the Tambon (Questions including whether head or spouse has parents who are alive & live outside of the tambon, whether anyone in household has shared rice with head’s or spouse’s parents in past 12 months, whether head’s or spouse’s parents shared rice with household, whether anyone in household helped head’s or spouse’s parents with free labor, whether head’s or spouse’s parents helped household with free labor, whether anyone in household has helped head’s or spouse’s parents with money, and whether head’s or spouse’s parents helped household with money)

D. Head and Spouse’s Relatives in the Village and Tambon (Questions including whether head or spouse has any relatives who live in village or tambon but not in household, whether anyone in household has shared rice with relatives who live in village or tambon in past 12 months, whether relatives shared rice with household, whether anyone in household did labor exchange with relatives, whether household has let relatives use farm equipment owned by household for free, whether relatives allowed household to use farm equipment owned by relatives for free, whether anyone in household has helped relatives with money, and whether relatives helped household with money)

 

E. Non-Relatives Inside the Village and Tambon (Questions including whether anyone in household has shared rice with non-relatives who live in village or tambon in past 12 months, whether non-relatives shared rice with household, whether household helped non-relatives with free labor, whether non-relatives helped household with free labor, whether household has let non-relatives use farm equipment owned by household for free, whether non-relatives allowed household to use farm equipment owned by non-relatives for free, whether anyone in household has helped non-relatives with money, and whether non-relatives helped household with money)

IX. Parent’s Characteristics (Questions including parents’ primary occupation, parents’ educational background, parents’ positions in village, how much land was owned by parents, how land was acquired, how household compares to others in village in terms of wealth, how head’s parents compare to others in village in terms of wealth, and how spouse’s parents compare to others in village in terms of wealth)

X. Inheritance (Questions including whether head or spouse has inherited anything from parents, what was inherited, how many rai were inherited, value of livestock at the time it was inherited, value of house at the time it was inherited, how much debt was inherited, value of land at time it was inherited, and when item was inherited)

XI. Household Assets (Questions including whether anyone in household owns asset, how many, how much asset cost, how household got the money to buy asset, largest source of money, how much came from this source, and how long household has owned asset [assets: TV - color, VCR, air conditioner, telephone, cellular telephone, refrigerator, motorcycle, car, pick-up truck, long tail boat with motor, large fishing boat, washing machine, gas stove, bicycle, stereo, or other])

XII. Agricultural Assets (Questions including whether household is involved in any agricultural activities, types of activities, whether anyone in household owns asset, how many, how much asset cost, how household got money to acquire asset, largest source of money, how much came from this source, how long household has owned asset [assets: walking tractor, large four-wheel tractor, small four-wheel tractor, set, sprinkler, threshing machine, rice mill, crop storage building, large chicken coop, other large building for livestock, or other asset], how many ponds household owns, size of pond, whether pond is a shrimp pond or a fish pond, how many years pond has been operational, how much it cost to build pond, how household obtained money for pond, largest source of money, how much came from this source, how many livestock are owned by household [cows, buffalo, pig, chicken if > 50, or ducks if > 50], value of livestock, whether household believes increasing farm size would make it more profitable, and barriers to doing this)

Household Business (Questions including whether household currently owns a business, how many, type of business, how many years business has been in existence, from where idea to start business came, whether household owns entire business or percentage, the percentage, who else owns business, how many people work for business, how many of these people are members of household, whether business has paid anyone in cash for work in past 12 months, how many workers were paid, lowest daily wage paid, highest daily wage paid, how wages are determined, whether there are any major assets owned in conjunction with business, types of assets, how many are owned, how much assets cost, how household got money for assets, largest source of money, how much came from this source, and how long household has owned item)

A. Additional Start-Up Capital (Questions including whether household needed additional funds to start business, for what did household need additional funding, how much additional funding was needed, and how household got additional funds)

B. Scale of Business (Questions including whether household believes if they could increase the size of the business whether it would be more profitable, the barriers to doing this, and why household can’t borrow necessary funds)

XIV. Housing and Landholding (Questions including whether household owns or rent house, how much rent is, if someone wanted to buy a similar house what the cost would be, how many rai were cultivated in past 12 months, how many plots were cultivated in past 12 months, type of land, what type of claim household has to plot, type of land certificate that covers plot, how many rai are in plot, when plot was acquired, how plot was acquired, sources of financing for plot, largest source, how much came from this source, current value of plot, km from house to plot, whether plot has access to water in the cold season, whether plot has access to water in the hot season, how many bags of chemical fertilizer were used last year, the numbers from these bags, whether plot is in the tambon, whether household owns any other land, how many plots household owns, type of land, type of land certificate that covers plot, how many rai are in plot, when plot was acquired, how plot was acquired, sources of financing for plot, largest source, how much came from this source, current value of plot, km from house to plot, and how plot is currently being used)

Expenditures (Questions including during a typical months how much household consumes of item, unit of measurement, price per unit, and total value of expenditures/consumption of item in a typical month [items: rice household grew themselves, rive bought, other grains, milk & milk products, meat, alcohol consumed at home, alcohol consumed away from home, tobacco, gasoline, or ceremonies] how much household has spent on house repairs in past 12 months, how much household has spent on motorcycle repairs in past 12 months, how much household has spent on educational expenses in past 12 months, how much household has spent on clothing in past 12 months, and how much household has spent on food eaten away from home in past 12 months)

XVI. XX.
